Liverpool set to meet Christian Benteke’s release clause.

Liverpool are ready to take their summer spending beyond £80million by triggering the release clause in Christian Benteke’s contract.
The Anfield club had initially been reluctant to meet the £32.5m valuation Aston Villa but, having been in constant dialogue with officials at Villa Park, they are now prepared to meet the terms in an attempt to land Benteke.
Brendan Rodgers has been a long-term admirer of the Belgium international and considered bidding for him last summer but was deterred by the fact he was recovering from a serious achilles injury and wouldn’t have been ready to play in the Champions League.
Benteke has been a thorn in the side for Rodgers in recent years and he tormented Liverpool’s defence in the FA Cup semi-final in April, and if Benteke agrees to the move, as seems likely, he will get the frontline striker he has been pursuing all summer.
By being prepared to finance the move for Benteke, it is another clear show of faith from Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owners, in Rodgers. Should the deal be completed, it is likely to bring an end to the arrivals at Anfield for this window.
